Wilkinsburg Sanctuary Project for Peace

OUR PROGRAMS

We seek to be a presence of peace and hope in our community as we lift up Wilkinsburg as a wonderful place to live, work, worship and attend school. Though many of us represent the Christian congregations of Wilkinsburg, we welcome and work alongside people of all faith traditions for the saving of our young people and beloved community.

Project Peace

Project Peace is a service camp for youth and young adults ages 14 - 22 which takes place right after school lets out. The camp seeks to inspire youth and to beautify our community. Each youth is paid a generous stipend and a closing celebration for families is a true highlight!

Art and Talent Show for Peace

Once a year the Wilkinsburg Sanctuary Project for Peace challenges the youth of our community to create peace.

Youth in grades 6-12 submit artwork or perform in dance, rap, singing and poetry. All youth are given a $50 stipend for participating.

Martin Luther King Vigil

On Dr. Martin Luther King Day we gather together along with our inter-faith partners to pray for peace in our community and world. We also work to bring youth to this celebration so that the legacy of Dr. King can be passed on to the next generation of peace-makers.

Prayer Vigils

Throughout the year, we gather to pray for peace not only in our houses of worship, but out on the street.

Whenever there is a loss of life, the Wilkinsburg Community Chaplains gather for a prayer vigil with the community to provide comfort and hope.

Community Chaplains

Each chaplain is a licensed or ordained minister of a congregation in Wilkinsburg. Chaplains are credentialed by the Willkinsburg Police Department and participate in regular trainings. The mission of the chaplains is to provide a pastoral presence in response to a critical incident in our community resulting in serious injury or loss of life to the residents of Wilkinsburg. Pancakes for Peace

Once a year we gather religious, civic and community partners to a delicious breakfast to simply get to know one another. Networking is key to the work of peacemaking and Pancakes for Peace allows us to share with each other and gain new partners.

2025 Peace Partners

Peace Partners are financial supporters from businesses, non-profits and congregations who make a $150 or more donation to support Project Peace.

In 2025 we are delighted to include in our list individuals who give a $100 or more donation.

Peace Partner donations are critical to being able to offer a $300 stipend to each youth who participates in the Project Peace Service Camp every June. Every year we need to raise over $20,000 to provide this life-changing experience. As one parent shared with us, “You did not know my daughter and what she was doing before Project Peace. This Project has changed her life!”

Peace Partners for 2025 will be added to the list monthly. This year we will celebrate their donations at the Community Celebration at the end of Project Peace and at our annual Dr. King Interfaith Prayer Vigil for Peace.
